Observation

The teacher was not actively supervising and did not see the child when he threw the ball, resulting in a head injury. WAC 110-300-0005 Definitions. "Active supervision" or "actively supervise" means a heightened standard of care beyond supervision. This standard requires an early learning provider to see and hear the children they are responsible for during higher risk activities. The provider must be able to prevent or instantly respond to unsafe or harmful events. Dispute Description: I do have some concerns. Reading through the compliance it is worded as such that we had a teacher marked for inactive supervision, which makes it sound and feel that he had no supervision on his children. It's hard for me as an educator to read that. When I have a teacher, who is actively engaged with his children, supervising his kiddos and we get marked for an inactive supervision. It is hard to swallow. Should teachers not engage on playground with kids? Do we need to send out memos that they need to stand in corners so children can't run behind them. I want to make sure that I'm putting the right message out there for our educators and what our purpose is in our profession. It's unfortunate that the football possibly hit our kiddo, however he immediately reacted and asked if it hit her. Children move around on the playground and he knew she was near the playhouse. I feel as a center we do everything we can to make sure we are putting our kiddos first as well as follow the WAC guidelines. If we could get more of an explanation that would be great and what our next steps are or what we need to do to finish our compliance.
